Circle of Care for the Arts

Fine Arts for Children and Teens offers innovative visual art classes to young people, age 4 to 21, nearly 80 percent of whom are at-risk.
100 donors and a $1 million endowment to provide arts education and build future arts audiences

The Arts are Not Accessible to All

Though Santa Fe is known worldwide for its rich artistic environment, for many residents of the city — including children, elderly and those without economic resources — the artsl experience is beyond reach.

When young people lack exposure to visual and performing arts they are denied the opportunity to discover their own talents, express themselves creatively and develop a lifelong appreciation for the arts. For older adults the arts can provide comfort and inspiration.

The Santa Fe Community Foundation's Circle of Care for the Arts supports local nonprofits that offer entree to music, visual art, theater, writing and other artistic genres.

"I took my first class with Fine Arts for Children and Teens when I was 8 or 9 and my teachers were so wonderful and caring. They nurtured my creativity and I went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art and art history at UNM. Now I am opening a gallery and performance space in downtown Albuquerque with a group of friends." — Nick Peña, 24

Programs that might be funded by the Circle of Care for the Arts include teaching children to play musical instruments, visiting artists in the public schools, hands-on artmaking as well as skill-building for jobs in the arts and strengthening the infrastructure of arts nonprofits.

"I took guitar classes at Outside In while I was in jail. I have played ever since. I want to thank Outside In for teaching me — the guitar has fed me, through and through. I am just thankful I can give back to others through music." — Weldon Brent Johnson, Jr., 24

How the Circle Works

Modeled after the Foundation's successful Circle of Care for Health and Human Services, which now exceeds $1.5 million, the Circle of Care for the Arts is an endowment. Gifts accrue to the principal, which will never be spent. The income earned from investments is used to make grants to nonprofits that the Foundation selects as the most effective in their fields. Membership is limited to 100 donors who each make a gift of $10,000. This gift may be paid over four years.

"Your gift will put paintbrushes in the hands of adults, oboes under the fingers of children and audiences in the seats of concert halls and theaters — in perpetuity." — Billie Blair, Former President, Santa Fe Community Foundation
