Community Against Violence: 2017 Tried & True Piñon Award Winner

The Tried & True Award honors an organization that is known for consistent high-quality programming, despite changes in the external environment.

Community Against Violence (CAV) has provided services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Taos since 1978. Its progenitors, Battered Women’s Project and Community Against Rape, both volunteer-based organizations, came together to form CAV. CAV is a dual-response agency, whose mission is to foster and support a community free from all forms of domestic and sexual violence.

Over the years, CAV has evolved to meet the needs of the community while integrating national best practices on prevention, intervention, and support services to rural Taos County and the immediate surrounding areas. Additionally, CAV’s Northern New Mexico Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) also serves Colfax, Guadalupe, Mora, Rio Arriba, San Miguel and Union Counties, including Taos and Picuris Pueblos.

In 2017, CAV expects to serve more than 670 survivors through direct services in a broad scope of well-established programs, including crisis response, emergency shelter, advocacy, and support programs including counseling, specialized parenting and support groups, transitional housing, financial empowerment with a matched savings program, offender intervention, community education, prevention and outreach.
