Expanding Opportunity for Young Families (EOYF)

Expanding Opportunity for Young Families (EOYF) is a collaborative community initiative coordinated by Santa Fe Community Foundation. EOYF aims to increase young parents of color’s successful entry into, retention, and completion of education and career pathways through alignment of services and systems innovation. It is a multigenerational approach that recognizes that supporting young parents’ educational and professional success includes supporting their young children and their families. Together with community partner organizations, young parents are co-leaders of this work to advance their families’ and community’s wellbeing and economic mobility.

2021 Activities

During 2020, Santa Fe Community Foundation and our EOYF community partners engaged in an extensive young parent engagement and planning process. As a result of this planning process, in 2021, EOYF will implement two pilot projects. These pilots will be used to test innovations that can be scaled up across additional training and degree areas, and new cohorts to build support for young parents throughout the education and career ecosystem.

  • 18 young parents will begin a health sciences degree cohort together in January 2021. The student parents will take shared courses at Santa Fe Community College, engage in weekly cohort meetings to support their college transition in their first semester, and each will receive intensive individual navigation/coaching from navigators from one of six community based organizations. Student parents in the cohort will also receive tuition assistance, financial support to pay for books, dedicated academic advising, and support accessing early childhood services.
  • 15 young parents will participate in an English-Spanish bilingual leadership development cohort designed to deepen young parent leadership in the EOYF work and within community partner organizations.  They will explore leadership and advocacy skills, culture, and concepts of community and will receive a stipend to compensate them for their time.

Support EOYF

Annie E. Casey Foundation has funded the initial planning process and pilot project with the expectation that their support will catalyze deeper community investment in sustaining and scaling the work. We are also grateful to Anchorum St. Vincent and Los Alamos National Laboratory/Triad National Security, LLC for their support of 2021 EOYF activities. Donations to the Expanding Opportunity for Young Families project will support:

  • Financial supports for student parents in education pathways, such as helping with unexpected emergency costs, early childhood education and care co-pay vouchers, and supplies like laptops
  • Grants to community organizations providing intensive navigation and case management support to young parents in education pathways
  • Young parent leadership development work
  • Further development and scaling of the model to new training and education areas and additional cohorts.
