Expanding Opportunity for Young Families (EOYF)

Expanding Opportunity for Young Families (EOYF) is a collaborative community program coordinated by the Santa Fe Community Foundation. EOYF works to increase young parents of color’s successful entry into, retention, and completion of education and career pathways through alignment of services and systems innovation. It is a multigenerational approach that recognizes that supporting young parents’ educational and professional success includes supporting their young children and their families. Together with community partner organizations, young parents are co-leaders of this work to advance their families’ and community’s wellbeing and economic mobility.

2021 Activities

During 2020, the Santa Fe Community Foundation and our EOYF community partners engaged in an extensive young parent engagement and planning process, leading to the development of three program areas:

  • In January 2021, we launched a young parent health sciences degree cohort at the Santa Fe Community College. Participating student parents receive a variety of financial supports, engage in regular cohort activities, and receive one-to-one support from one of several community-based organizations. While continuing to support this cohort, we are also planning to launch future education pathway cohorts in 2022.
  • In summer of 2021, 17 young parents participated in an English-Spanish bilingual leadership development cohort designed to deepen young parent leadership in the EOYF work and within community partner organizations. Each parent produced a photovoice story describing an early childhood or education/career pathway issue important to them. EOYF staff and partner facilitators continue to work monthly with these young parent leaders to expand their leadership and advocacy.
  • EOYF partners with Fathers New Mexico and Gerard’s House to employ two English-Spanish bilingual young parent peer navigators. The peer navigators help other young parents to connect to community resources and services to address urgent needs and to work towards their families’ goals.
