CASA First Volunteer Training
Details
About the event
The first training session will be Thursday Oct. 5th, 2023, 9am-12:30pm, and will continue for the next 4 Thursdays (ending Nov. 2nd). Training encompasses our Court Appointed Special Advocates program and our new Abrigo Advocates program, which provides any trauma-impacted infant, child or youth from Santa Fe, Rio Arriba or Los Alamos Counties with a caring advocate (even if they are not actively system-involved).
Additional Information
After Advocates are paired with a child or youth within the First Judicial District, they may check in with them in their home, provide access to resources, support the family, and have the opportunity to take the youth and/or family out for some relaxing fun. Training includes about 30 hours on topics such as ICWA, trauma, court reports, and more. Volunteers also complete an application and background check before they are paired with a child/youth. CASA staff support volunteers through check-ins, resources, and the ability to reach out at any time. After training, volunteer advocates typically spend 5-10 hours/month volunteering. Specific times/dates are flexible.
Prospective volunteers can contact Jessica Henderson at jessica@casafirst.org or 505-428-6066, or sign up through the link on our website. The support and care we receive from the Santa Fe community makes a genuine impact in the lives of local children and youths.

Eldorado Chess Tournament
presented by Santa Fe Rooks
This is a public, 2-day rated chess tournament held at the Vista Grande Library. It's open to all ages and skill levels, with cash prizes and entry fees of $30 per person. Participants play four games at the rate of 90 minutes per person per game, with a break for lunch. It's a great way to make friends and get an official rating for beginners. Also, sections are arranged by skill level, so anyone from novices to experts will face an appropriate challenge.
