Nonprofit Board Orientation Program

Nonprofit leadership is critical for maintaining a thriving nonprofit sector and delivering services to our communities. We are very pleased to be collaborating with SCORE Santa Fe to bring you this nonprofit board development program. Our goal is to create an ongoing orientation that gives active board members an introduction to the nonprofit sector and provides support, knowledge, and skill-building around the fundamentals of nonprofit board participation.

The series will include speakers from the community to address various topics, including consultants, active board members, and SCORE volunteers. Participants will be provided with a board book at the first session. Handouts and information from each session will be added to the book for ongoing reference. Each participant will also receive their own copy of the BoardSource publication, Ten Basic Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards.

Program participants:

  • Should be current board members at a nonprofit(s) in northern New Mexico.
  • Drawn from a range of experiences and organizational focus areas.
  • Will form a cohort with networking, and mutual support encouraged.
  • Are expected to attend at least 6 of the 8 sessions.
  • Can expect a modest amount of preparation for each session.
  • Should expect to attend at least 6 of 8 sessions (dates below).
  • Group size will be small with no more than 20 participants.

Note: We will consider up to two board members from a single organization so please don't hesitate to invite more than one of your members to apply.

Content will include:

  • Nonprofits and your community
  • Legal responsibilities of board members
  • Board governance
  • Board recruitment (including diversifying your board) and assessment
  • Finance for boards
  • Fundraising for boards
  • Relationships with staff and fellow board members

Sessions take place at the Santa Fe Community Foundation from 3-5pm. Participants are expected to attend at least 6 of the 8 sessions.

  • Friday, April 20, 2018 - Governance Part Two: Building a strong board - recuriting, assessing, and sustaining a great nonprofit board
  • Friday, April 27, 2018 - Legal Responsibilities: Understanding the fine print of your responsibilities as a board member
  • Friday, May 4, 2018 - Finance for Nonprofit Boards
  • Friday, May 11, 2018 - Developing an Effective Board Team
  • Friday, May 18, 2018 - Board-Staff Relationships
