Trauma-Sensitive Resiliency: Toolkit for Systemic Wellbeing

Thursday, September 9, 2021 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM

The Sky Center of the New Mexico Suicide Intervention Project's (NMSIP) Toolkit for Wellbeing explores the intersections of trauma-sensitive resiliency practices and community health utilizing research from suicide prevention, interpersonal neurobiology research, and systems theory. This contemporary context-responsive workshop offers six key strategies for enhancing resiliency inside of all that people in the helping professions are holding. Presenter Erin Sibley Doerwald, LCSW shares relevant theories connected to coping with trauma exposure, working with difficulty, and preventing burn-out with related practices: social connection, self-regulation, mindful awareness, hope, physiological wellbeing, and nature.

Understandably, vicarious trauma and burnout are at an all-time high in the helping professions and nonprofit world. As professionals in these settings, we hold space for the human stories and challenging personal contexts that our colleagues and clients bring into the room, as well as our own. During the past 18 months, this has become increasingly harder to bear as the cumulative and collective stress continues and often is intensified.

This workshop helps us work with both - practicing how to sit with our own discomfort while we hold space for the discomfort of others. It explores how we might be aware of and offer information on trauma-sensitivity in our workplaces while also being trauma-sensitive ourselves.

Pairing practices for soothing and grounding with didatic material that can sometimes be activating, participants will be engaged in experiential resiliency strategies intended to enhance well-being in the process of the workshop. As a mental health practitioner working in high crisis setting, Erin knows first-hand what it means to create safety and connection for others while also cultivating personal and professional resiliency. This workshop is an offering so that we may all enhance our own staying power while in the field of offering compassion and healing to others.

The Toolkit for Wellbeing Workshop shares the wealth of our firsthand experience as clinicians and non-profit leadership creating a sustainable, resilient non-profit organization through a systemic, trauma-sensitive lens. This workshop will focus on enhancing resiliency in the face of trauma.

Workshop Objectives:

Participants will learn about research-informed strategies for enhancing resiliency and preventing suicide while being sensitive to the symptoms of traumatic stress and current local and global contexts. Participants will practice experiential exercises that non-profit leadership and staff may utilize to enhance their own individual and their organization’s resilience. Participants will engage in experiential resiliency strategies that will enhance their well-being in the process of the workshop, leaving them feeling grounded, soothed, and renewed while at the same time offering ways this can be implemented in the context of their work as non-profit leadership and staff.
