Learning Lab: Collaborating with Tribal Communities
with Dustin Martin and Tina Whitegeese

Successfully collaborating with Tribal communities to deliver social services can feel daunting. You may think that your programs are needed, but how do you know for sure? Which officials or employees within the Tribe do you approach first? What is the best time of year to open dialogue about collaboration? What customs and etiquette should you be aware of before trying to seed a collaboration?

Unfortunately, all of these questions and hurdles discourage many non-Native organizations from sharing their capacities with Tribal Communities. Worse yet, some collaborations waste precious time and energy by starting programs, unaware of the unique social climate in which they are trying to take root.

Join the employees of Wings of America, a Santa Fe-based 501(c)3 that has successfully worked with Native communities for 30 years, to gain insight into how you may be able to share your mission with your Tribal neighbors. Topics include:

  • Approaching tribal communities;
  • Tribal contact points;
  • Tribal needs and values;
  • Tribal networking techniques.

Who should attend?
Board and staff members from service organizations of all sizes and focus areas.

Dustin Martin is Dine and has been the Executive Director for Wings of America for the past 5 years. Wings programs take Dustin into every southwest Pueblo and Navajo community. After completing an NCAA Division-I running career and graduating summa cum laude from Columbia University, Dustin was eager to return to the Southwest to begin giving back to the organization that opened so many doors for him. Serving nearly six years as program director before being promoted to his current position, Dustin continues to wear many hats to make sure the “Wings Family” is taken care of. He is also a proud alumnus of the Wings of America program.
