Learning Lab: Making the Major Gift Ask
with Emilie De Angelis

This is an intensive session that coaches participants through each phase of asking a top prospect for a major gift confidently. Created for board members and staff, we’ll focus on the groundwork that sets the stage for a smooth personal visit, a framework with actual talking points that you can use and re-use in solicitations, and scenario-based training to prepare you for every kind of outcome. With a little structure and inspiration, you can free up your best energy and enthusiasm for asking your most critical donors for support. Our session will include role play exercises, as well as tips for effectively coaching trustees and other leadership.

Executive Directors, Development Directors, other nonprofit staff, and board members.

A native New Mexican, Emilie De Angelis has helped leading nonprofits in the museum, arts, culture, and education fields connect with donors to achieve transformative ambitions for more than 20 years. While based in Chicago, she served as Director of Capital Gifts for the $400 million Modern Wing expansion at the Art Institute of Chicago, raised several million dollars for the early stage of the famed Steppenwolf Theatre's capital expansion, and executed the roll-out of a $50 million endowment campaign for the Latin School of Chicago. A fourth-generation Burqueño, Emilie moved back home in 2016 to reunite with family and rediscover sunshine.

Her consulting practice helps clients locally and nationally. She is an appointee to the City of Albuquerque’s Arts Board by Mayor Keller, Co-Chair of the Builder Committee for Harwood Art Center / Escuela del Sol in Albuquerque, and a trustee of FUSION Theatre Company. Emilie has served as a recurring guest lecturer for exhibition studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and as a career panelist for the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs. She taught a series of grant writing and evaluation workshops for Metropolitan Library Services of Chicago. She conducts trainings in Albuquerque for the Center for Nonprofit Excellence and the Association of Fundraising Professionals NM. She’s also served as a reviewer on several funding panels, including the Institute of Museum and Library Services in Washington, DC, the CityArts panel for Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Albuquerque Community Foundation.
