Use the Box for Kindling: Working with Rural Communities
with Kayt Peck

This session will address issues common to rural communities, especially ethnically diverse rural communities, and provide methods to improve effectiveness of the nonprofit sector serving or existing within those communities.

1. Improved ability to adapt to rural and diverse communities
2. Skills in identifying common denominator issues
3. Awareness of mainstream assumptions and effects on different cultures
4. Better understanding of how different cultures address social needs
5. Ability to adapt common nonprofit “tool-boxes” to rural communities

Presenter
During her 26-year career serving the nonprofit sector, Kayt Peck has specialized in serving diverse communities, including rural, and served for many years on the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Diversity Committee, including a time as Diversity Chair. She has specialized as a grant expert, raising over $30 million for both domestic and international organizations, including serving as the Chief Development Officer for the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq. She has lived in and served rural communities most of her life, growing up on a Texas ranch, and currently living comfortably among her neighbors in the historic land grant community of Rociada. She is also an accomplished writer with five novels currently in print, each one effectively telling stories from life in rural areas.
