Learning Lab: Board Wellness - Understanding Basic Finance for Nonprofit Health
With Hilary Kilpatric, CPA

Tuesday, February 25, 2020 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Among the many governance roles of a non-profit board, financial oversight is one of the most important responsibilities. Approving annual audits, monitoring financial statements, and budget management are key responsibilities. As such, the ability to understand and evaluate the financial health of a non-profit organization is paramount. This workshop teaches participants how to easily analyze and evaluate an organization’s financial health through a basic understanding of financial statements and key financial ratios. Financial Statements: Learn how financial statements are created, what they mean and why the numbers differ in each statement.

· Balance Sheet
· Income Statement
· Statement of Cash Flows
· Statement of Functional Expenses

Financial Ratios: Learn to calculate key financial ratios for your organization. Understand industry benchmarks and how to use this information to make informed decisions about the financial health of your organization:
· Liquidity Ratios
· Operating Efficiency Ratios
· Program and Fundraising Efficiency Rations
· Fundraising Efficiency
· Debt Ratios
· Revenue Sources – Ratios and Allocation
· Functional Expense Allocation

Participants will engage in hands-on activities to help analyze the financial health of two sample companies by reviewing the financial statements, calculating and interpreting key ratios, and giving strategic recommendations based on their analysis.

Hilary Kilpatric is a bilingual (Spanish and English) business consultant and native Santa Fean.  She began her career at Deloitte & Touche where she earned her CPA license specializing in International Trade and Non-Profit clients. Searching for a more purpose-driven career that would allow her to make a positive impact on the world, she left her position at Deloitte to earn an MA in International Relations at San Francisco State University and then joined the Peace Corps serving in Guatemala for three years. Her experience includes creating a hands-on education program focused on developing key business processes designed to build capacity for artisan enterprises for the International Folk Art Market. Most recently, she worked for an artisan social enterprise in Laos where they experienced a 20% increase in growth over 2 years as a result of applying her capacity building business practices. She has relocated to Santa Fe and started a consulting company. She serves on the Board of Directors and Finance Committee for La Familia Medical Center and is passionate about using her business background to help non-profits and social enterprises build sustainable practices to maximize their impact.
