Learning Lab: Nonprofit Financial Management - Outsourcing Financial Management
The Transformative Potential of Outsourcing with 501(c)PA

How can you decide if outsourcing financial functions is right for your organization? Whether your have a volunteer treasurer handling your books, a small staff, or a full financial team, elements of outsourcing can be valuable and effective in our sector.

Presenters David Rivard, MS-Mgt, CPA and Marty Epstein, both of 501(c)PA, will address:

  • The unique challenges faced by NPO's
  • Outsourcing models
  • Advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing
  • Financial statements - strategic financial management insights provided by expert design and analysis
  • Cost comparison, in-house vs. outsourced accounting services
  • What to expect if you decide to outsource

We'll have time for Q&A with the presenter and your fellow participants.

David Rivard, MS-Mgt, CPA began his career in Vancouver, Canada, where he earned Certified Management Accountant and Chartered Accountant degrees. In 2004 he relocated to Minnesota where he received his CPA designation, and in 2014 earned a MS in Financial Management while serving as Assistant Dean for Libraries at the University of Maryland. His experience includes public accounting in both national and small firms, entrepreneurial leadership, higher education administration, and almost 3 years as CEO for 501(C)PA, New Mexico’s only nonprofit CPA firm. David is passionate about developing innovative organizations, and helping nonprofits to magnify mission impact and reduce executive stress through  outsourcing financial management services.

Marty Epstein, MBA, CPArecently retired from the accounting faculty at Central New Mexico Community College where he taught for 20 years. He earned his MBA from the College of Santa Fe and worked in a number of industries before entering academia including banking, manufacturing, and not-for-profit. Marty currently serves on the Boards of 501(C)PA, the Vortex Theatre (28 years!), and the Asian Technology Information Program, a scientific research organization. Outside of his accounting profession, his primary interest is in the diverse theater work he has done in Albuquerque. Over the past 30 years his endeavors have included acting, directing and doing anything necessary to put quality productions on stage!
