Aligning Evaluation with Culture and Values
with Robert Sturm

Wednesday, September 30, 2020 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Participa         Participants will explore the ways in which the use of mainstream planning and evaluation methods can hinder the success of the programs being evaluated when they are not aligned with the culture, values and goals of the community a program is designed to serve.  Then we will look at a model that can be used to frame program development and evaluation within the culture and values of those the program is designed to serve, thus aligning the planning and evaluation process with the goals of the program and increasing the likelihood that the evaluation process can be incorporated into an ongoing assessment and improvement process, so that it is truly useful to those running the program and meaningful to all stakeholders.

Robert Sturm has more than 25 years of experience working with nonprofit and philanthropic organizations.  The focus of his career has been on increasing access and equity for all groups and questioning the assumptions and structures that support structural racism, misogyny, homophobia, racism and other barriers to inclusion and equity.  Robert has been the Executive Director of the New Mexico Community AIDS Partnership since 2008.  In that role he has worked to bring resources to some of the most marginalized and fragile communities in the state and has collaborated with those communities to develop and implement strategies to assure that their voices are heard and increase their access to programs, services and resources.

Robert’s work with NMCAP also involved the training of more than 2500 medical, behavioral health and education professionals on how to increase access and better serve LGBTQ people. Robert also works with a team at the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation on projects to research and improve access and quality of care for LGBTQ people. Robert worked for Native Americans in Philanthropy for three years as their Southwest Regional Weaver, building relationships between Native individuals, organizations and communities, philanthropic organizations and mainstream nonprofits.  Robert is a principal in Indigenous Methods LLC, a consulting company created to offer culturally appropriate and community-based program planning and evaluation services to Native American programs, organizations and communities.  Robert’s partner in Indigenous Methods is Lee Francis, IV from Laguna Pueblo.
