More Trees in Santa Fe!

Thursday, May 27, 2021 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Trees help communities in so many ways, including contributing to health, mental health, and environmental justice.
Santa Fe has joined a worldwide movement to plant trees. The City has put together an ambitious program; the Santa Fe Watershed Association is busy planting finding volunteers and planting trees. In Albuquerque The Nature Conservancy and TreeNM have been leaders in supporting that City’s commitment to plant 100,000 trees.
Nationally, as well as locally, there are greenspace disparities between neighborhoods separated by the wealth gap. It is critically important that we address those parts of our community that lack trees and all of the partners are committed to looking for projects in underserved neighborhoods to ensure benefits are equitably distributed.
In this webinar we’ll hear from Sarah Hurteau about the science of trees in an arid region and the many useful tools that TNC developed to advance tree planting. Andy Otto will talk about the Watershed Association’s plans to bring citizens into tree planting efforts in Santa Fe. And Council Member Carol Romero-Wirth will describe TreeSmart Santa Fe and how the City will start to plant trees in the right location, while also addressing tree deserts in the City.
The presentation will run for an hour.
