Juneteenth on the Plaza
Details
About the event
A day of joy, remembrance, and celebration honoring Black freedom and culture, this Juneteenth gathering will have vendors, activations, live jazz and blues bands, local food and craft vendors, and a beautiful mix of community, culture, and connection.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, specifically marking the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to ensure all enslaved people were freed, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Our 5th year celebrating on the Plaza, this day is about remembrance, freedom, culture, and celebration!
Presented by Vital Spaces in collaboration with Lensic 360, this year’s Juneteenth on the Plaza features Sudan Archives. First emerging as a self-taught avant-garde violinist, Sudan Archives combined left-field strains of R&B, hip-hop, and experimental electronic music with hypnotic string loops and the fiddling style of West Africa. The line-up also features local groups the Staciawa Collective, Shine Eye, DJ Sol plus live African drummers, poets, speakers, vendors, and a Black writers showcase curated by Sankofa Arts Alliance of New Mexico! June 20th 2-9 PM.
Stop by and say hi to the Empower! Black Futures Community Fund — we'll be tabling and would love to see you there.
