Keeping Chimayó's traditions alive

The annual San Isidro Day celebration is a cornerstone of the Chimayo Cultural Preservation Association's mission to bring the community together in celebration of Chimayó's rich cultural heritage.

Last year, more than 150 community members gathered to bless the water and plant the community garden. Irrigation improvements expanded water access to new areas of Plaza del Cerro, strengthening this shared community space.

Youth from Los Maestros and the New Mexico Acequia Association's internship program led hands-on activities, including making seed balls and planting the garden. The partnership between the Chimayo Cultural Preservation Association and the New Mexico Acequia Association demonstrates how collaboration can deepen youth engagement with cultural knowledge and traditions.

Community members were inspired to work alongside young people and witness the next generation carrying forward the traditions of acequia stewardship and farming.
