On this episode of Community Matters, we celebrate Resolve, recipient of the Santa Fe Community Foundation’s 2026 Quiet Inspiration Piñon Award. Host Sandra Session-Robertson speaks with Resolve Executive Director Alena Schaim. Together, they explore how Resolve is empowering New Mexicans of all ages with practical violence-prevention skills, from setting boundaries and navigating conflict to building confidence and advocating for others. They also discuss the importance of early education, the ripple effects of prevention, and how everyday actions can help create safer, stronger communities.

Alena Schaim is the Executive Director and Instructor at Resolve. For more than 20 years, she has led programs that help youth and adults speak up for themselves and others, while supporting organizations and schools in creating environments that reduce risk and increase protective factors. Her work focuses on reimagining violence prevention as not just about stopping harm, but about building the skills, supports, and environments people need to succeed—moving away from fear-based approaches and toward connection, joy, and belonging. Alena has presented at regional and national conferences on topics including Empowerment Self-Defense, sexual and domestic violence, and preventing violence for specific communities.
