Gerard's House — Mamas Compartiendo y Sananado

The Mamas Compartiendo y Sananado (Moms Sharing & Healing) program at Gerard's House was created by and for families with immigrant roots and honors a wide range of losses, including death, deportation, incarceration, and separation by borders. Our program offers grieving parents the resources to alter generational patterns of inherited grief and do it in the comfort of a community of other caregivers.

The program provides monthly hybrid support groups to grieving Spanish-speaking moms and pregnant moms. These groups create a safe, warm space for mothers and their babies and toddlers to connect and receive peer support.

Over the past two years, the program has multiplied, and what started as a group of five moms is now a comprehensive program serving 74 mothers. Our program is currently offering:

  • Access to our Spanish language WhatsApp group chats that provide information about resources in our community, connection with other moms and collaborative partners who are also a part of the group such as Many Mothers, EarthCare, Fathers New Mexico and others.
  • Monthly diapers in collaboration with the Food Depot’s Diaper Depot. In 2022, we distributed 35,695 diapers.
  • Access to emergency funds (when available) for moms experiencing financial hardship to pay rent and bills. In 2022, we distributed over $7,000.00.
  • Wraparound services provided by our program navigator and in collaboration with the Peer Navigation Program by Father’s New Mexico. From August 2022 – December 2022, 65 families received navigation services and were connected with community resources.

“I would like to thank you all first because through your program, I’ve been able to meet a lot of other mothers," said one participant.

"In a new country as a single mom and alone without any family members close by has been very difficult for me but thanks to these support groups, I am trying to better my life and be a better person for myself, but more importantly, for my children.”
