August is Black Philanthropy Month, a global initiative that highlights and promotes the power of Black giving. In this episode of Community Matters, we have the privilege of speaking with Edward Jones — the Vice President of Programs and Philanthropic Advising Services at ABFE, the Association of Black Foundation Executives — about the state of Black Philanthropy across our nation.
Edward Jones is the Vice President of Programs and Philanthropic Advising Services at ABFE, where he deeply embraces the organization’s vision. In his role, he leads philanthropic professional development & convening activities as well as supports the design and implementation of the organization’s racial justice and equity program initiatives for over 1,000 members and partners across the globe. Jones is currently a board member of The Weissberg Foundation, a Virginia-based family foundation, which, “envisions a world that recognizes inequities and actively seeks to dismantle structural racism by continuously building access, opportunity, and power so that all can thrive”. He’s served on the Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers (now Philanthropy DMV) Racial Equity Working Group. He was a founding member of Black Benefactors (DMV focused; now sunset) and newly formed, Benefactors: A Black Giving Collective, a national giving circle committed to empowering Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofits.
Edward was a founding member of Black Philanthropic Alliance and a long-time supporter and former board member of Us Helping Us, People into Living, Inc. a Washington, DC-area organization, committed to improving the health and well-being of communities of color through innovative programs and services and – through a vision of inclusiveness – committed to reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS in the entire Black community. Edward served as commissioner of Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Serve DC Commission for volunteerism. Prior to joining ABFE, he was the Director of Conference Programming at the Council on Foundations and a former manager with Amtrak. Edward is a graduate of the University of Akron, OH.

Community Matters: Street Homeless Animal Project
In this episode of Community Matters, we speak with Karen Cain, an Animal and Human Rights activist, homeless advocate, licensed mental health therapist, and the Founder and Executive Director of the Northern New Mexico Street Homeless Animal Project. “SHAP” has provided vital support to the unhoused and their animal companions for over 25 years, offering essential vet services and providing supplies like food, leashes, and blankets to over 150 human-animal families each year.
