Empty Stocking Fund: Delivering help, sharing hope

Every community has its defining traditions — moments when people set aside differences and come together in solidarity. In Santa Fe and northern New Mexico, one of those traditions is the Empty Stocking Fund.
Since 1981, this program has provided emergency financial assistance to families and individuals facing sudden hardship in Santa Fe and Rio Arriba counties. At its core, the Empty Stocking Fund reflects the best of who we are: neighbors helping neighbors.
As partners in this effort, the Santa Fe Community Foundation and The Santa Fe New Mexican are humbled by the generosity of this region. Year after year, individuals, families and businesses step up to give — sometimes large gifts, sometimes modest ones. All are essential.
Last year, thanks to the generosity of our community, the Empty Stocking Fund distributed $412,000 to 292 families. These grants covered critical urgent needs that strengthen stability for local households: car repairs, medical bills not covered by insurance, rent or mortgage payments to prevent eviction, or help keeping the lights and heat on during the coldest months of the year.
One recipient captured the heart of this program in their note of thanks:
“I’m in tears that this process was so easy and now I will be able to get my car fixed. The benefit of this program will not only give me transportation but allow me to work more to save up money! You have restored my faith in Santa Fe. Community is best when it comes together to help each other.”
That simple statement is exactly what the Empty Stocking Fund is about.
The people who turn to this fund are often doing everything right: working hard, caring for their families, contributing to our community. But when life delivers an unexpected blow — a broken transmission, a medical emergency, a sudden loss of income — the margin between stability and crisis can be very thin. For those already living paycheck to paycheck, the stress of one unplanned expense can be overwhelming.
That is why this program is so meaningful. It is not only the practical support that makes a difference — it’s also the relief that comes from knowing stability is within reach and that a caring community stands with you. To receive help in a moment of crisis is to be reminded that you are not alone and that your neighbors want the best for you.
This year, applications for the Empty Stocking Fund will open Dec. 1. The best way to ensure that families receive help right away is by donating today. By giving today, you make it possible for the fund to be ready to respond immediately — easing stress for our local families and delivering help when it is most urgently needed. Donations of all sizes are encouraged and greatly appreciated.
At a time when headlines so often focus on division, the Empty Stocking Fund offers a different story of unity, compassion, and shared responsibility. It shows what is possible when we choose to see the good in each other and care for one another.
So, we invite you to join us: Donate today, spread the word, and help us deliver relief and hope to our neighbors. Together, we can keep this tradition alive and strong.
