
From relief to recovery: Supporting community resilience after the fire

Four years ago this spring, a prescribed burn escaped containment in the mountains above Mora County, becoming the largest wildfire in New Mexico’s recorded history. It burned more than 341,000 acres, destroyed over 900 structures, and forced thousands of people from their homes. The landscapes and communities of Northern New Mexico have not been the same since.
I think about that fire often, and the moments of community resilience, connection and vulnerability it revealed.
