On the Ground
About the program
The Learning Hub is proud to offer On the Ground, a series of educational opportunities designed for nonprofit leaders working in the rural communities we serve. These sessions bring learning, connection, and peer exchange directly to communities — helping even the smallest nonprofits build skills, share knowledge, and strengthen local networks. Join us for upcoming events in San Miguel, Mora, Rio Arriba, and Taos counties. Programs in Taos are presented in partnership with the Taos Community Foundation.
Learning where you are
On the Ground is a Learning Hub program designed to bring accessible, relevant learning opportunities directly to the rural communities we serve. Recognizing that many rural nonprofits operate with limited staff, time, and resources, On the Ground focuses on practical education, peer connection, and relationship-building that meet organizations where they are. Sessions are designed to be approachable and responsive to community needs, helping even the smallest nonprofits learn alongside peers facing similar challenges.
On the Ground programs take place in communities across San Miguel, Mora, Rio Arriba, and Taos counties, with offerings delivered both in person and virtually to increase accessibility. Programs in Taos are presented in partnership with the Taos Community Foundation, reflecting a shared commitment to locally grounded learning.

Omar Torres
Omar Torres (he/him) brings 17 years of experience to the realm of organizational leadership and development. Starting his journey in organizing spaces, Omar learned early that effective leadership is about listening, adapting, and sharing power. Today, he facilitates workshops incorporating Paulo Freire’s methods, guiding groups to bring out the knowledge that is already present in the room and move from problem-solving toward critical thinking and systemic change. Every workshop is guided by the principles of cultural humility, ensuring that the learning process acknowledges how our praxis affects the whole, and committing to a process of continuous growth alongside the communities we serve.

Leadership and Workplace Dynamics
With Magdalena Karlick
Through a mix of interactive activities and practical discussion, participants will explore and define respect, boundaries, and responsibilities in their work environment. Continuing education units (CEUs) will be provided at no cost.
HR Essentials: Employment Law Essentials for Nonprofits
With Linda Strauss
Running a small nonprofit means wearing the HR hat whether you trained for it or not, and the cost of getting employment law wrong can do real harm to a mission-driven organization. This session covers the federal and New Mexico rules every nonprofit employer needs to have on their radar: complying with the Healthy Workplaces Act and paid sick leave requirements, correctly classifying your people as employees, volunteers, contractors, or interns, knowing the difference between salaried (exempt) and hourly (non-exempt) workers, and understanding when you're legally required to accommodate an employee's medical condition or religious beliefs. You'll leave knowing what you must do, what you can do, and what to watch for.
HR Essentials: Preventing Discrimination and Harassment
With Linda Strauss
Discrimination and harassment claims are among the most damaging, and most preventable, risks a nonprofit can face. This session covers what federal and New Mexico law require of you as an employer: who is protected, what counts as harassment, and how to respond when a complaint comes in. We'll also look at where diversity, equity, and inclusion practices stand legally in 2026, and how to build a workplace that is welcoming and respectful while still being a fun place to come to work.
HR Essentials: Hiring Right: A Process That Attracts the Right People
With Linda Strauss
A good hire is hard enough to find, and a bad one is costly. The U.S. Department of Labor estimates a bad hire costs an organization at least 30% of that employee's first-year earnings, and for a small nonprofit the damage to team dynamics and momentum can be even harder to recover from. This session covers writing job descriptions that actually reflect the role, posting and recruiting in ways that widen your candidate pool, reviewing a resume in no time flat, gauging whether a candidate will fit your culture, and conducting interviews that surface the right information (and stay on the right side of the law). You'll also learn the one interview question that will save you every time.
HR Essentials: The Gift of Feedback
With Linda Strauss
Many leaders avoid addressing issues until the molehill has grown into a mountain, and most employees say they want more feedback than they get. This session reframes feedback as a gift you get to give rather than something to be avoided, and offers practical language and structure for the conversations leaders tend to dread: addressing a performance concern, redirecting a behavior, and recognizing good work in a way that actually lands. We'll also cover how to receive feedback well, because the leaders who do it best are usually the ones modeling it. You'll leave with words you can use right away, and comfortably.
